And Now Announcing…

I have successfully gotten us both into hammocks!

For Richard’s birthday I originally purchased a ENO hammock from REI so that we would both had hammocks.  He’s been really jealous of mine lately.  I wasn’t really excited about buying when I knew I could make it myself, but buying, making, and testing a MYOG Hammock without Richard noticing was untenable.  So I bought it.  Well I got a really big surprise when his birthday finally came.  Richard loved getting a hammock, but he wanted one of my MYOG ones.  So I bought 7 yards of 1.9 nylon in a beautiful green and got to work!  I went with a double layer 10ft hammock with a stretchy side modification and a sleeping pad sleeve.  I ran out of Gutterman thread but when I get more tomorrow, I will be adding a storage pocket off the side and a bishop bag.

One thing I did was instead of ordering more Amsteel to make Richard’s hammock suspension, I took the opportunity to let him take my MYOG Whoopie Slings and order myself new Dyneema Whoopie Slings!  So Richard got my old suspension and I got an upgrade!  I shaved two more ounces off my hammock weight bringing me down to 13.2 oz!  This brings my whole shelter setup down to 26.4oz.

  1. Hey Joslyn. How do you like those dyneema slings compared to the amsteel?

  2. So far I’m liking them a lot! They feel just as sturdy for my weight as the regular Amsteel and they are much lighter. One thing I will note is that the coloring is wearing off at the points where they are spliced but I’ve gone over them very carefully and it’s just the color fading, there is absolutely no fraying at all.

For a more in depth look look back in a week after I come back from my very first hammock trip!
